In today’s digital era it seems that more and more rappers are learning to hone the power of social media in order to push their product and create new fans. This week’s hot new artist is Maryland raised, YouTube sensation Wax. Wax has a unique style that blends an almost Johnny Cash sound with a Jay Z vibe. Most known for his freestyle rap called “New Crack”, which has accumulated well over 1 million YouTube views and is done while Wax is driving an SUV. The law may state that you can get a ticket for driving while talking on the phone but there are no regulations for shooting a freestyle while driving through traffic. Since 2006 Wax has released 5 mix-tapes and each of them have been labeled a huge success.

Wax has accumulated over 10 videos that have gone viral on YouTube, racked up over 20 million views and is known for continuously flooding his site, Waxdotcom.com, with fresh content. In early 2011 the famous YouTuber Ray William Johnson asked Wax to collaborate on a song called “Orphan Tears”, which has received over 15 million views to date. Finally, in March 2011 Wax announced that he signed a deal with Def Jam Recordings and simultaneously released his latest mix-tape titled Scrublife. The day before the release of Scrublife Wax’s lead single “Dispensary Girl” debuted on Entertainment Weekly and received critical acclaim.

Wax’s debut album is hinted to be released in October but has not yet received an official release date. Websites like DjBooth.net rave over Wax and hail him as one of the best underground rappers. I must say, when you listen to his mix-tapes his music is so unique and his lyricism is so laid back and comical yet profound and energizing. Because Wax is a social media conglomerate below you will find a plethora of videos and links to download his music. Scrublife is available for free and can be downloaded by clicking below and being directed to Wax’s blog. This week’s fresh track is none other than Wax’s lead single “Dispensary Girl.” And if you have 5 minutes to spare watch the “No Crack” freestyle below, it will blow your mind.

Featured on XXL’s 2011 Freshman cover, Kendrick Lamar is on an accelerated climb to the top of the rap game. Lamar is one of those rappers that people look at and tag as “real” and true to his craft. Kendrick released his first mix-tape titled Youngest N***** In Charge at the age of 16, under the name K. Dot. Due to the immense amount of hype caused by the album he was signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and released two dominating mix-tapes. In 2009 he decided that he would change his stage name to his real name, Kendrick Lamar, and then released a self-titled EP; the Kendrick Lamar EP. This project got him major buzz and from there the west started getting behind the Kendrick Lamar movement. In late 2010, as his popularity grew, he was asked to go on tour with Tech N9ne and Jay Rock. Immediately following his tour departure he released a mix-tape titled O(verly) D(edicated) and was then approached by Dr. Dre to write on Dre's upcoming album Detox. Many fans believe that Dre gave him a new view on his flow and truly tweaked Kendrick’s lyrical ability

Kendrick’s most recent project, released on July 2nd, 2011 is titled Section 80 and has been critically acclaimed. Below you will find a video where the legendary Pharrell stops into The Record Plant of LA and actually approaches Lamar telling him how he played the album on repeat while he was abroad. Many praise Kendrick as the man who is going to uplift hip-hop and bring it back to the days of Nas’ Illmatic. One aspect about Lamar that you will notice when you begin to play Section 80 is that every track is considered difficult, there is not one song that lacks lyrical drive. This can truly be seen when listening to our track of the week, “Hol’ Up.” Initially, you hear Chris Brown sounding horns and you think the track is going to be a pop cut but then Kendrick comes in with a focus on religious hypocrisy. If you are sleeping on Kendrick I beg you to take the time to click the link below and download this tape, I put my word on it. Until next week, Stay Fresh My Friends. Dj Dolph

If you are a long time follower of my blog you will remember my former post about Kanye West's social media marketing strategy, interestingly enough Maybach Music followed the same strategy.

When visiting websites like hotnewhiphip.com, djbooth.net and worldstarhiphop.com before the release of this album you would notice “Self-Made” banner ads all over the place. This is the first and most obvious form of marketing and I must say they did it very well. They targeted key demographics and made everyone aware of their CD. Another form of social media marketing is the release of promotional videos that gain viral attention and are re-posted on numerous social media sites. Maybach Music’s Wale released a series of videos on hotnewhiphop.com called his “No Days Off Vlog”.

Here you can see one video, and you will notice that in each video he continuously shouts out “When I say self you say made….” This chant went viral and even when attending Rick Ross’ concert the fans went crazy shouting the name and date. The date of May 23rd was ingrained in every fans head and if you didn’t know the date by the end of the concert, something was seriously wrong with you.

Ads like this were placed all over the Internet, it just says the title of the album and fans instantly realized that was Maybach Music’s new album. At the same time leading up to their album release, the rappers delivered a non-stop flow of music. This music kept fans interested and wanting more, so by the time the album dropped, it was an obvious buy. When artists release songs, videos and pictures to the public then those fans usually post this content to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. When fans post and repost this media then they are actually helping out Maybach Music because they are doing the marketing for them! Click the link below to support Maybach Music and enjoy the song of the week “600 Benz”. Stay Fresh My Friends: DJ Dolph

Dolph Says,http://www.blogger.com/profile/18087008632918888256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1824990182508395971.post-47407637002157000182011-06-19T12:33:00.000-07:002011-06-19T12:35:04.366-07:00Rate My Blog Please!Hello everyone, this week I am trying to get some user feedback about my blog! class="MsoNormal">The music industry is ever evolving and in the more recent years has transformed into a digital download contest. Even more specifically, the hip-hop industry has become a playground for digital download and free content. With the advent of websites such as djbooth.net, hotnewhiphop.com, worldstarhiphop.com and hiphopisdream.com, music is available at the click of a button. At the same time hip hop music is becoming easy to homebrew, aka throw has seen several individuals step into the rap game without label support and mostly due to their success using digital marketing. To learn more about how this is done I will introduce this week’s fresh download candidate: D’Pryde. This 17 year old Canadian the first three days. The question is how did this teenager create a buzz large enough to reach these kind of numbers and the answer is digital presence. Over two years ago D’Pryde set up his YouTube Channel and started doing ‘freeverses’ over popular songs, filming them and uploading them to his page. One year later D’Pryde had uploaded 150 videos amassing over 30 million views. Last summer on July 14th, 2010 D’Pryde got a call from hip hop commoner Dr. Suss One and was signed to his label Mars Music.
<p Yourself - An Interview With Attorney Keith Hackenberg
Whether you are an artist, manager, agent or entrepreneur, one subject that requires an immense amount of attention is intellectual property. Most people are under the impression that registering a copyright, trademark or patent is a difficult process, but with some help from your attorney and as basic understanding of IP, your property can be protected quite easily. In order to teach you a few tricks and get your IP properly secured, I interviewed attorney Keith Hackenberg, who specializes in intellectual property.

So let’s say you are a manager and you have just developed your first management company. After a great deal of debate you develop a name for your company, but what you probably haven’t thought about is the availability of that name. An easy way to check the status of your name is to run a trademark search on USPTO.gov. Mr. Hackenberg pointed out that one of the most important issues to keep in mind when using an attorney is that time is money. The last situation you want to be in is to go to your attorney and get billed, only to find out that the mark you want to register is not even available.

The next decision you will have to make is whether you want your trademark to be registered in your state or federally. Mr. Hackenberg informed me that 95% of the time he recommends registering a trademark federally. By doing so this allows you to partake in interstate commerce and also gives you the ability to collect statutory damages, if infringement occurs. The only instance in which you might consider registering your trademark with the state is if you are a local business, with no plans for expansion. For those of you who have a logo but have failed to register it, fear not. Mr. Hackenberg explained to me that even if a name or logo has yet to be registered, it still has the ability to bear the TM stamp. By placing this mark on your logo you are informing consumers that this is a trademark and part of your brand.

For those of you who are artists, you may be questioning the process associated with registering a copyright. First, take a trip to Copyright.gov and head to the forms section. From here you will see a form called the CO Form, simply click on the download link and the form should open. What you are now viewing is the standard catchall form for every type of copyright currently available. Mr. Hackenberg recommends that you look through the form and get a general idea of the information it asks for. After you realize you have all the information necessary to complete the form, you should then hire an attorney. According to Mr. Hackenberg, hiring an attorney is a solid investment when filing a copyright because it ensures that the documents are going to be filled out correctly and completely.

I know many of you are tech savvy and are probably saying to yourself, “I think I will just go to legalzoom.com.” According to Mr. Hackenberg, this is the worst decision you could make, when attempting to register a trademark, patent or copyright. The reason being that when you register through Legal Zoom all you receive in return for your cash is a piece of paper. The benefit of using an attorney is the counsel, expertise and personal face-to-face connection you receive. Mr. Hackenberg also pointed out that if you experience a problem when registering IP through Legal Zoom, there is no one to give you advice. When using an attorney, he or she will look at the problem, analyze it and then point you in the right direction.

I encourage everyone to take matters into your own hands and take the time to protect yourself by registering your intellectual property. The process may seem intimidating, but I hope that through this blog you have come to the realization that registration is actually quite easy. As always, Stay Fresh My Friends: DJ Dolph.
<p In today’s day and age it is essential that every artist creates an online presence but celebrities are slowly learning this beast can become a severe burden. With the advent of Web 2.0, user generated content has become the dominant player in the social media web, attracting over 115 million Internet users in 2010. As Facebook, Twitter and the influx of blogs take over the web, celebrities with large social media followings are becoming targets for lawsuits and victims of defamation.

During the Twitter boom of 2009 our first subject Miley Cyrus approached her inaugural social media disaster. One of Miley’s devoted and loyal friends made the intelligent decision to post this delicious photo on the Internet.

Where the photo landed I do not know but let’s be serious it belongs on Hightimes.com. Anyways, if you can take your eyes off the guy on Pluto, holding a chalice of vino, so high he can’t open his eyes, then you might notice delicate Miley sitting on her "sober" boyfriends lap mocking a "slanted eye" look. Several days later an Asian Pacific Islander named Lucie Kim filed a 4 billion dollar class action lawsuit against Cyrus, claiming the gesture was a civil rights violation. The judge eventually threw out the lawsuit but it’s a reminder to all artists that social media presence must be monitored carefully.

If we skip a year forward to August 16th, 2010 we come to an issue between the boy band pop star Joe Jonas and his underage ex Demi Lovato. According to AceShowBiz, “On August 15th Canadian blogger Zack Taylor claimed Jonas and 17 year-old Lovatio - who is under the legal age of sexual consent in many U.S. states - were ‘friends with benefits’.” Jonas did not appreciate this comment and within days his legal team had delivered a letter to Taylor demanding that the blogger remove all comments pertaining to the relationship. According to TMZ.com, who acquired the letter, the singer’s attorney warns, “Your repeated posting of fabricated stories regarding our client must be viewed as evidence of your wilful or reckless disregard for the truth and reflect a malicious attempt to attack and devalue our client's good name and reputation." "We will be monitoring your site and will be advising our client of his legal options, including, but not limited to, the filing of a lawsuit against you for defamation.”

Although the Joe Jonas case never transformed into a court case, it paved the way for the first celebrity social media defamation case. On March 3rd, 2011 actress Courtney Love settled a defamation lawsuit with the fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir for $430,000. In 2009 Love began to grill Simorangkir over a $4,000 clothing payment. In court Love argued that her rants were merely an expression of opinion and were not damaging. Simorangkir expressed that as an entertainer Love has social media power at her back and personally I don’t blame her, if I was called an "asswipe nasty lying hoebag thief" I’d want Love’s head and her cash. This settlement is important because it shapes the precedent for future social media defamation cases. It should remind all artists that yes, social media can aid in your progression but it’s a beast nobody should feel comfortable flirting with. With fame comes a following and a following creates power so keeping that in mind we should all remember the viral nature of Web 2.0

To honor the current King of Social Media I give you Chamillionaire’s new song “Charlie Sheen”. Drusky Entertainment is a full service entertainment company specializing in show production. They offer every service required to host a show including, but not limited to, booking, advertising, technical/production and settlement. Due to the fact that they offer such a wide variety of services Mr. Drusky has more business-to-business transactions than most entertainment companies. I recently interviewed Mr. Drusky to learn about some of the dirty tricks he experiences when dealing with agencies and other production companies.

I listed seventeen commonly used dirty tricks and asked Mr. Drusky to elaborate on the ones which he felt are most commonly used in the industry. The seventeen tactics presented during the interview were: phony facts, higher authority, add-ons, personal attacks, good guy / bad guy, intimidation, lock-in tactics, take it or leave it, high ball / low ball, bogey, chicken, exaggerated assertions, threats, scoundrel, scrambled eggs, foot in the door, and deadlines. Mr. Drusky immediately leaned towards two of these devious methods, intimidation and take it or leave it. Mr. Drusky said that when dealing with many individuals in the industry some sort of intimidation factor becomes present. Mr. Drusky explained this by stating that when you operate in such a saturated industry you have to be confident in your work if you are going to properly sell your skills. It just so happens that many individuals feel like one of the best ways of doing so is by trying to intimidate you, yet in reality they are simply boosting their own self-confidence. Mr. Drusky said there are several ways to handle an individual who is trying to intimate you. One way that he believes is the best, when dealing with a potential client, is to simply play into his or her attitude. In other words you let them boost their ego because at the end of the day they will enjoy your presence because you make them feel better about themselves.

According to Mr. Drusky another commonly used ploy in the entertainment industry is the take it or leave it attitude. Mr. Drusky claims that he runs into this situation daily when dealing with the agents representing the artists he uses to produce a show. For example, many agents will shoot a price to Mr. Drusky and instead of leaving room for negotiation they simply say they have flat rate and he can take it or walk away. Essentially, they are saying that they have the power to leave you in the dust and go with another production team. Mr. Drusky said that this situation is very hard to gauge and can be a deal breaker if not handled appropriately. He claimed that the most beneficial way to handle this is to play hardball with the agent to create your own buying power. For example, if an agent is telling you to take the price or walk away inform the agent that you will walk away and that you have another artist willing to perform at the rate you want. If the agent refuses to negotiate then at that point it is his loss because his client loses on a great opportunity. Mr. Drusky said that if it gets to that point and the agent walks away it is likely that the artist will hear about the situation and if he, she or they feel as if it was a lost opportunity you will be contacted again by the agent. The only difference is that the next time you will be the one holding the dice.

I want to thank Mr. Drusky for his time and informative words of wisdom. Of course, I cannot leave my readers without presenting the jam of the week so I bring you the hottest song I have heard in a while, Wiz Khalifa featuring Too Short – On My Level. The Greatest Story Never Told...I guess you could say it was prophecy," implying the album would never be released. Exactly one month later on December 19th, 2007 Saigon informed the world that he reconsidered retiring and planned on releasing The Greatest Story Never Told. Well Mr. Saigon it’s now January 19th, 2011 and The Greatest Story Never Told still has not been told. So your probably asking “Will this great story ever be told?”. It’s a long story.

In May of 2008 Saigon was released from Atlantic and received 100% ownership of the album. In February of 2010 Saigon announced via his Facebook (yep were getting closer to the present don’t worry) that he got a new deal with Suburban Noize Records to release the album on February 15th, 2011 (cross your fingers). So it is now less than a month from the release of what some critics are calling, “The most anticipated album since The Carter 3.” and new singles are beginning to drop. The track list has been released, which you can see below, and having heard almost 75% of the album I must say this is going to be an album to remember. Don’t cry you don’t have to wait a month to hear some fresh Saigon. If you’re interested in listening to some of the tracks off the album don’t worry because numerous songs from the album were released over the last half of a decade. Tracks like "Believe It", "Come On Baby" and “The Greatest Story Never Told” (background track for the week) are all great songs to throw on your playlist right now to satisfy that itch. Enough about Saigon the bottom line is mark your calendars for February 15th and cross your fingers for the release of an amazing debut album that has been in the works for six years. Keep it fresh my friends. Dj Dolph

No. Title Producer(s) Length

1. Foxx was supposed to release this album on July 20th, 2010 shortly after the release of his hit single "Winner" featuring T.I. and Justin Timberlake. After a debate with the distribution team the album was rescheduled for December 21st, 2011. In order to keep Jamie’s hype alive two tracks off the album were released last week. The first is titled “Living Better Now” featuring Rick Ross and the second single is titled “Fall For Your Type”, which features modern say superstar Drake. Both of these tracks are unbelievably catchy and Foxx’s voice as usual is simply irresistible.

Maybe even more appealing is the fact that with all the commotion that comes with releasing an album Foxx still makes time to give back to his community. He is currently an ambassador for VH1’s Save the Music campaign, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in America's public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child's complete education. To date, the Foundation has provided more than $47 million in new musical instruments to 1,750 public schools in more than 100 cities around the country, impacting the lives of over 1.6 million children. Foxx is working with Save the Music to create a national “Word Train” promotion about the redemptive power of music, inspired by his film The Solist. If this program is successful it will create buzz for Save the Music and encourage more individuals to take the time to make a donation.

Save the Music and Foxx recognize that our youth hold the future in their hands and if we fail to influence them in positive ways music will lose its appeal. By developing long-term, sustainable instrumental music programs in schools VH1 provides children with equal access to music education regardless of their financial situation. Individuals like Jamie Foxx who care about those who are less fortunate truly make a difference in a world where many are so self absorbed. Without Save the Music who knows how the music industry would turn out in 40 years and without the money to purchase instruments who knows what hidden talent lies in some of these schools. With programs like this the music industry is not only giving back to those who are financially struggling but also insuring that there will always be a future in music. I urge all my viewers to take a look at the Save the Music website linked below and in the spirit of Christmas make a donation to help those who are less fortunate. Below are some links to Jamie’s to new material and don’t forget to pick up a copy of his new album Best Night of My Life next week. Stay fresh my friends. Since its release it has been receiving an unbelievable amount of attention and rumors in the hip-hop world have been circulating claiming this album may be considered a “hip hop classic”. I find this interesting because it seems as if there are always two crucial components for a CD to release and be considered a “classic”. The obvious aspect is that the artists’ work must be ground breaking but interestingly enough the second component is what we call “hype”. The question then becomes, how does an artist create buzz in today’s fast paced media driven culture? To answer this question I turned to a video I recently watched on a website called TED.com.

In this video a man named Alex Ohanian, one of the founders of Reddit, discuses how to make a “Splash in Social Media”. He tells a story about how a non-profit organization called Greenpeace; in an effort to end whaling, put together a campaign to track hump back whales. Interestingly enough they decided to name each whale and start an online poll to see which whale should be focused on. Therefore, each whale was given a very serious name, most of which were in a foreign language signifying tranquility and other oceanic qualities. Then for some odd reason, out of nowhere, they named one whale “Mister Splashy Pants”. Whoever thought of this name and why is unknown, but what we do known is that this poll was turned into a social media party, almost entirely due to the name Splashy Pants. Of course, Mister Splashy Pants won the contest, gaining almost 80% of the votes.

Now before your minds start wondering, NO, Kanye West did not make another public outburst, this time demoralizing our beloved Mister Splashy Pants. Although I’m almost positive Kanye’s best friend Taylor Swift will write a love song about Mister Splashy Pants’ rescue and who knows maybe she will win another Grammy for it. Anyways, the correlation between Mister Splash Pants and Kanye West ultimately lies in the splash. The question in the entertainment industry today seems to always be how can we make a splash in social media in order to crate hype and ultimate success? So how did Kanye go from being Mr. A-hole, who publicly deflates little girl’s egos on national television, back to Superstar producer/rapper?
Two words: G.O.O.D. Fridays.

No, Easter is not approaching and no this has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. G.O.O.D. Fridays is a free music program made by Kanye West, which consists of releasing a song every Friday. (his label is called G.O.O.D. Music and each Friday a song is released, get it?) For 13 weeks straight Kanye released singles to create a social media frenzy. Fans absolutely loved this idea and it did not take long before hip-hop websites started buzzing about how great the music was. By the third G.O.O.D. Friday Kanye had fans literally waiting online for him to post his most recent release. When it finally became time for My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy to drop, G.O.O.D. Fridays had successfully transformed it into a highly anticipated album and a huge social media splash.

Another splash Kanye created can also be found below. Kanye decided to draw his own album art for My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy and shockingly enough the cover depicted two individuals having sexual intercourse while smiling (with fangs). When Kanye sent the album artwork in for approval, clearly it was denied but that is just where the story starts. Social media sites went absolutely insane over this picture while fans sat in disbelief as to why Kanye would believe this was appropriate. Whether Kanye meant to create such hype over this issue or not the bottom line is that Kanye splashed around quite a bit before releasing this album, a true marketing genius in my opinion.

Needless to say, the album is truly remarkable and I highly advise anyone who is sleeping on Kanye West to go to iTunes and make a purchase. (Link conveniently located below). The album lived up to and surpassed the hype that was built around it and for the last two weeks has been the only CD in my car. Stay fresh with Kanye West my friends. Dolph.

Dolph Says,http://www.blogger.com/profile/18087008632918888256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1824990182508395971.post-42437183073114930492010-11-16T05:18:00.000-08:002010-11-16T05:34:44.531-08:00

A few months ago Michael Jackon’s first single off his posthumous album “Michael” was partially leaked onto the Internet. The track, which is titled "Hold My Hand", features pop superstar Akon and is deemed for success on the top 40 pop charts. Sources claim that the track was downloaded over 50 million times in a little over two months. There are some fans who are upset with this release, for they believe these tracks never should be commercialized, but as many of us know controversy appears in some way during every project. It is the opinion of many fans around the world that an artist of Michael’s caliber should be the only one to make the decision that the album is ready for sale. Either way, the album is ready to drop and November 12th graced us with the COMPLETED fresh single and a great interview with Konvict’s Akon, where he describes the emotions that came when working with the legend we know as Michael Jackson.

Try to tackle any project and you will find that problems rise left and right but there is no problem that trumps the death of Michael Jackson in the middle of recording his come back album. Luckily, Akon’s track with Michael was primarily completed before his death but because the track was partially leaked onto the Internet they stopped production and the track was never finished. Akon discusses that working with Michael on this project was like nothing he has ever experienced before. Akon explains, “"Just to be in the same room [with him], I felt like everything I wanted to achieve in life had already been achieved. That's how incredible that aura [is].” When Michael died Akon picked the project back up in memory of Michael and wow, that show commitment on Akon’s behalf. Even more applauding is the fact that Michael was the manager of this project and Akon simply the producer. For Akon to turn around and take the reins and release such an explosive song is simply remarkable.

This project like any other required an extreme amount of time and dedication but in the end the song is one that we will always remember. Akon has expressed that having the ability to work with Michael has changed his career forever, proving that the most effective way to gain greatness is to surround oneself with greatness. In the end I believe Michael would be proud to see this project come to an end and in his honor I hope this track has mainstream success.

All of us miss and will always remember the “King of Pop”. RIP MJ

Stay fresh my friends, Dolph.

(Click below to play “Hold My Hand” in a separate window. The group Far East Movement is sweeping the nation with their unique sound and interesting collaboration techniques. Creating a well functioning team will aid any group in ultimately achieving success and Kev Nisk, DJ Virman, Prohgress and J-Splif know all to well how this works. The band has branded their image by creating an infectious type of music known as electro pop. Their first hit single “Girls on the Dance Floor” was the number one requested song in their city before they were even signed. Their second single “Like a G6” is currently toping the billboard top 100 chart and bounced at every club around the United States. Far East Movement has titled their first album “Free Wired” meaning that one of their goals is to remain as socially connected to their fans as possible.
With a properly functioning team an artist has the ability to focus on social presence because other important responsibilities are being delegated to various individuals.

In today’s high paced and Internet driven society, it is more important than ever for artist to understand the concept of teamwork. It takes more than an artist with a unique sound to become popular and as obvious as that used to be in today’s world it becomes even more apparent. An artist should be able to focus exclusively on his or her music while the team behind the artist works to advance popularity. In the world of hip-hop the artists’ manager is the teams president and foundation. The manager works to make sure that every aspect of the artists’ career is moving at a proper pace and in the right direction. The manager will grow the team by uniting the artist with producers, engineers, record executives and talent agents. As the artist grows the team will grow as well, public relations and social media presence are two aspects that are more important today than they have ever been.

To download Far East Movement’s latest album “Free Wired”, which dropped on October 12th, click on the iTunes link bellow. In the meantime sit back and listen to their new single “Don’t Look Now” featuring Keri Hilson. Don’t sleep on these guys; they are bound to keep your iPod jamming. I believe that with hunger, determination and drive anyone can achieve anything, but it is the true definition of success in one's mind that determines whether one will tackle all challenges to succeed.
